William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). Writer, master of the short story, born in Greensboro, N.C. Brought up during the post-Civil War depression in the South, he held various jobs before becoming a teller in the First National Bank. Jailed for embezzlement (1898), he started writing short stories in prison under his pseudonym (O. Henry). In 1902 after his release, he moved to New York City, and produced the first of his many volumes, Cabbages and Kings, in 1904. His stories provide a romantic and humorous treatment of everyday life, and are noted for their use of coincidence and trick endings. Other collections include The Voice of the City (1908), Whirligigs (1910), and Waifs and Strays (1917, posthumously). Despite enormous success, his life was marred by debts, ill health, and alcoholism.
