"Goya, his life and work". By Jean-Francois Chabrun. With 120 illustrations in full color. In is not sufficient for us to portray Goya's long life through his loves, his ambitions and his art. We must also relive Spanish history in the last half of the 18th Century when the artist was born-those great and also more tragic years during which the invader never left Spanish soil, and during which the country was constantly plunged into political turmoil. Events reached the height of complexity under Napoleon, and in Goya's eyes, Spain's position in the world was simply intolerable. Jean-Francois Chabrun, poet, journalist and art critic, has attempted here to portray Goya, the first of the so-called "Moderns" against the dramatic background of the historic events of those times. Strangely enough, Goya was not inspired until the age of 45, when he became deaf and unable to communicate with the world except through his eyes, his paints and his brushes. Eventually Goya was forced into exile in France, where, in 1828, he died at the age of 82. His work remains the very symbol of suffering-of Spain's terror, fury and hope. 278 pp . 8 1/4 by 6 inches. A powerful book.
